Golden boy! Neymar the penalty shootout hero as hosts Brazil win first-ever Olympic football gold

Barcelona superstar Neymar put Brazil ahead, only
for Max Meyer to haul Germany level as the final
went down to the wire

Neymar was the hero as Brazil won a first-ever
Olympic football gold after a dramatic penalty
Barcelona superstar Neymar put the hosts ahead in
stunning fashion with a 25-yard free-kick before
the break.
However, Germany hauled themselves level in the
second-half when Schalke’s Max Meyer fired home
into the bottom corner.
Neither side could find a winner in normal time as
the game went into the added 30.

Nils Petersen saw his spot kick saved leaving
Neymar to sweep home to spark stunning scenes
of celebration.

The wounds remain raw two years on from a 7-1
World Cup semi-final shellacking that not only saw
the Selecao lose the chance of winning on home
turf but their dignity.
Olympic football may be a sideshow for most but
it has been the main event for the millions of
Brazilians that, throughout the competition, have
crammed around TVs and filled stadiums at an
Olympics when tickets have proved hard to shift.
